Created as part of Columbia Journalism School's Points Unknown Mapping class

As New Yorkers avoided public transit during the pandemic, Citi Bike ridership in March 2020 was up 80 percent from the same time period in 2018. The increases have continued. New Yorkers made nearly 2.5 million Citi Bike trips in September 2020. 3.28 million trips were made during that same time period in 2021, after the release of the vaccine led New York City to began reopening more.

Citi Bike, a bike rideshare owned by Lyft, has over 25,000 bikes in New York City and nearby Jersey City and Hoboken, making it the largest bike share system in the US. Cyclists can pay by month, day or trip for a short bike ride - 30 minutes for riders paying per day or trip and 45 minutes for monthly subscribers.

The company also expanded its locations in 2021 further north and south, extending into Brooklyn's Sunset Park and areas of the Bronx, including Inwood, Morris Heights and University Heights.
