Hi! I'm Ilena, a data journalism student at Columbia University. This semester, I am taking a mapping class called "Points Unknown." As part of the course, we are assigned to different beats that our projects will revolve around - I am mapping migration. This page will be updated with my completed assignments.

Tools used: Mapbox GL JS was used to build maps. Python (pandas, altair and geopandas) was used to clean, explore and format data for mapping.

Final group project on food delivery workers in New York City. On scroll, the site displays the path a delivery worker took one morning, as the text provides more details of where he stopped, how far he biked and how much he earned.

🚗 Commutes in the New York Metropolitan Area

Mapping commutes in the NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The map displays the commute duration that is most common in each county. Clicking on each county shows the percent of residents that fall into each bracket of durations.

🔥 Wildfire Burn Probability

Mapping the burn probabilities in U.S. counties. Burn probability here is communicated as a ratio, so a 0.001 annual average burn probability in a county means that the average chance of a pixel burning within that county in a year is 1 out of 1,000.
